| Mode | Real door-to-door time | Cost per person | Best for |

| Train Tiburtina → Tivoli | 1h15–1h30 (35–60 min train + walking legs) | ~€2.60 one way | Those going only to Villa d'Este |
| Cotral bus from Ponte Mammolo | 1h10–1h30 | ~€2.20–3 one way | Those who want to get off near Hadrian's Villa |
| Car (A24 motorway) | 40–60 min (traffic permitting) | toll + parking | Those doing both villas on their own schedule |
| Organized tour | a full, managed day | from ~$114 all-inclusive | Those who want both villas + zero logistics |
Option 1 — Train: the most reliable for Villa d'Este
- Get to Roma Tiburtina (Metro B or urban train). Regional trains to Tivoli leave roughly every hour, some from Termini too: the regional line toward Pescara/Avezzano.
- Get off at "Tivoli", the useful stop after 35–60 minutes depending on the train. Careful: don't get off at "Bagni di Tivoli" or "Tivoli Terme" — they're 8 km from the town centre.
- Walk 10 minutes downhill to Piazza Trento: the entrance to Villa d'Este is right beside the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore. The route is signposted.
Regional ticket ~€2.60: buy it on the app (Trenitalia) or at the station, and validate it. The train avoids Tiburtina's traffic, which doubles travel times by road at peak hours.
Option 2 — Cotral bus: the most direct for Hadrian's Villa
- Metro B to Ponte Mammolo. On the upper level of the station you'll find the Cotral terminal.
- Cotral bus toward Tivoli "via Prenestina": for Hadrian's Villa, ask for the stop nearest the Hadrian's Villa turn-off (then ~1 km on foot or a CAT bus); buses "via Tiburtina" stop more conveniently for the centre/Villa d'Este (Largo Nazioni Unite).
- Frequency: every 15–30 minutes on weekdays, less often on holidays and in August. Tickets ~€2.20–3 at a tobacconist, the Cotral app, or vending machines: onboard purchase isn't always available.
Option 3 — Car: freedom, with two warnings
Take the A24 Rome–L'Aquila motorway, Tivoli exit, then follow the brown tourist signs. 40–60 minutes from the GRA ring road in normal conditions. The warnings:
- Hadrian's Villa has a dedicated paid car park right at the entrance: convenient.
- Villa d'Este doesn't: Tivoli's historic centre is a restricted traffic zone (ZTL) with limited parking. Aim for public car parks outside the centre (e.g. around Piazzale Nazioni Unite) and walk 5–10 minutes. If your GPS promises "arrival" right at Piazza Trento, it's routing you into the ZTL.
Option 4 — Tour from Rome: the turnkey day
Combined tours leave central Rome in the morning, include a round-trip bus, skip-the-line entry at Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este, and assistance (often an audio guide or a live guide). They cost about as much as dinner for two, but compress into one day what public transport turns into a puzzle of train timetables. It's especially worth it in summer (you skip waiting in sun-baked squares), on Sundays (services run less often) and if your hotel is in central Rome.
The calendar with dates and available spots is at the top of this page; the tour's details are on the Hadrian's Villa guide.
Getting between the three sites in Tivoli
- Villa d'Este ↔ Hadrian's Villa: 6 km, CAT 4/4X bus from the centre (Largo Nazioni Unite) or taxi ~10–15 min. Walking isn't advisable: it's a busy main road.
- Villa d'Este ↔ Sanctuary of Hercules Victor: 1.2 km, 15–20 minutes on foot, downhill along Via degli Stabilimenti.
- Villa Gregoriana: the romantic waterfall park (run by FAI, separate ticket) is a 10-minute walk from Villa d'Este: if you have an extra hour and a half, it completes Tivoli's water theme.
Frequently asked questions
What's the cheapest way to get from Rome to Villa d'Este?
The regional train from Roma Tiburtina to Tivoli: about €2.60 one way, 35–60 minutes, then a 10-minute walk. Round trip, that's under €6 total.
How do you get to Hadrian's Villa by public transport?
Metro B to Ponte Mammolo, then a Cotral bus toward Tivoli via Prenestina to the Hadrian's Villa turn-off (the last stretch on foot or by CAT bus), or a train to Tivoli and a local CAT 4/4X bus to the entrance. Either way, budget 1h15–1h30 total.
Is there a direct bus from central Rome to Tivoli?
Not from the very centre: the Cotral terminal is at Ponte Mammolo (Metro B). The "centre-to-centre" alternative is the train from Tiburtina/Termini or an organized tour departing from Rome's historic centre.
How much does a taxi from Rome to Villa d'Este cost?
A private ride Rome–Tivoli costs roughly €60–90 one way depending on traffic and time of day: it only pays off split between 3–4 people or with a pre-booked transfer. For most travellers, the train or an organized tour beats a taxi.
Where can you park to visit Villa d'Este?
Central Tivoli is a restricted traffic zone (ZTL): use the public car parks outside the historic centre (around Piazzale Nazioni Unite and nearby) and walk 5–10 minutes. Hadrian's Villa, by contrast, has paid parking right at the entrance.
Can you do this as a half-day trip from Rome?
Only for one of the two villas. A realistic half day: depart at 8:00am, Villa d'Este 9:30am–noon, back by 2:00pm. For both villas you need a full day, whether by public transport or with a tour.
